Joint Mobilization That Can Treat Your Pain

While humans as a whole have improved our quality of life and have successfully delayed the effects of aging, one of the inevitable signs of aging is the onset of joint conditions. Of course, there are other causes of joint issues as well including accidents, work injuries or sports trauma.
In other words, joint dysfunction and pain often comes from trauma or overuse of the joints performing a specific movement. This can be seen from the structure and function of the joint region as it changes according to the limited mobility.
This comes from the cartilage nutrition that gradually starts to decrease from within the joint, resulting in other joints that will move in place to compensate for the stiff joint. As a result, these adjacent joints will then begin to deteriorate due to overexertion and use.
Apart from that, the relevant muscles that surround the stiffened joint will lose their ability to contract and relax accordingly, resulting in a tightness of motion. Eventually, this will result in what most will call a stiff joint.
From there comes the purpose and benefits of joint mobilization. It is a technique that is specially utilized by trained physiotherapists to restore the small, involuntary movements that assist joints to perform to their optimum. An example of a joint mobilization procedure involves performing a back and forth oscillation of the joint in order to restore motion.
The Joint Mobilization Treatment
Commonly also known as mobilizations, this form of treatment can be utilized to alleviate numerous joint issues stemming from different factors. These can include:
- trauma from accidental or sports injuries
- overworked joint from daily work
- natural aging symptoms
A joint mobilization treatment session usually starts with a physical and medical history assessment of the patient by a professional physiotherapist. This is an essential step that will ensure every patient is treated according to the appropriate level and measure required for their own safety.
The patient then proceeds to a comfortable and relaxed environment where the physiotherapist can proceed with the mobilization treatment. This can include readjusting or repositioning your body positions while applying an appropriate amount of force in the right direction.
With that, you should be able to sense a deep clearing of tension and pain from a single treatment!
Who can perform joint mobilization
By now, it should already be clear that joint mobilization requires a healthcare professional that is exceptionally trained and skilled in this area of treatment.
As joint mobilization is a form of manual therapy, it would require a certified physiotherapist to perform most of the mobilization procedures. However, there are certain levels or grades of joint mobilization treatments that are allowed for non-physiotherapists. The different grades are:
Grade I – any beginning range of motion
Grade II – full active range of motion
Grade III – full passive range of motion
Grade IV – range of motion into joint play with slow oscillations
Grade V – range of motion into joint play with a fast thrust
In this case, only certified chiropractors, osteopathic physicians, physical or occupation therapists are allowed to perform Grade V mobilization treatments. Massage specialists or other general masseuses are forbidden from performing this grade of treatment.
